COACHES CERTIFICATIONS

Head Coach: Must be 18 years of age or older (except High School Basketball coaches must be 21 or older)
Assistant Coach: Must be at least 18 years of age or older
Intern Coach: High School Students only

All Coaches and Team Aids must complete all required certifications. You will not be officially registered as a CYO Coach nor receive a CYO badge for that particular sport until all requirements are met and CYO has record.

You may not begin coaching practices or games/meets until you have your certified CYO Badge.

 
NEW CYO COACHES

(HEAD/ASSISTANT/INTERN):

  • Step 1: Complete the online coaches registration form at your CYO Club, which includes a background check. Visit your CYO Club and click on the specific sport you want to coach. Registration button should be on the righthand side.
  • Step 2: Upload a head shot to your Coach Member Account. Download instructions here.
  • Step 3: Obtain certification of the American Sports Education Program (ASEP) online through the CYO website.
    [This is a one time only requirement.]
  • Step 4: Obtain certification in the Called to Protect Training through the CYO office or any Oregon parish or school.
    [This is a one time only requirement for CYO.]
  • Step 5: Obtain certification in the Concussion Management Training per the law according to the state in which your team is located (i.e., Oregon or Washington). Football Coaches Concussion Training is part of Step 6, skip to Step 6.
    [This is an annual requirement by law.]
    • Oregon Coaches Only: NFHS Concussion in Sports. You must register first and log-in. You need to click the "Purchase" button but there is no charge for the course.
    • Washington Coaches Only: WIAA video.
  • Step 6: FOOTBALL ONLY: Obtain certification from USA Football/Heads Up (This is a two-part process):
    • You will need to get the coupon code/access from your Athletic Director.
    • Online Tackling Certification
    • In person Safety Training with the Player Safety Coach - which, includes Concussion Training.

  • Step 7: For CYO Club Sports (Volleyball, Basketball, Swim, Track & Field)
    • Inform your athletic director when you have completed all the requirements.
    • After team registrations your Athletic Director will receive your official CYO coach's badge - if you have met all requirements, otherwise they will notify you when it is ready.

 
RETURNING CYO COACHES

(HEAD/ASSISTANT/INTERN):

  • Step 2: Make sure your head shot is uploaded to your Coach Member Account. Download instructions here.
  • Step 3: Obtain certification in the Concussion Management Training per the law according to the state in which your team is located (i.e., Oregon or Washington). Football Coaches Concussion Training is part of Step 6, skip to step 6.
