CAMP ACTIVITIES 2010 - CHECK OUT ALL THE NEW CAMPS!
The focus of our activities is to provide a safe, fun atmosphere where we can develop respect for ourselves, others and the environment. Some activities we offer are weekly Mass, swimming, canoeing, paintball, archery, riflery, recreation, arts & crafts, nature, basketball, hiking, slip-n-slide, sleep-outs, campfires, talent shows, liturgy, stargazing, drama, making new friends, evening devotions and growing in faith.
NEW - Paintball Camp ($395)
For campers 11 - 14. New to Camp Howard this year is a specialty camp focused on paintball. Campers will organize themselves into teams, and have daily paintball wars. With a brand new paintball area and equipment, Paintball campers will spend two hours a day tightening their skills. When not in the paintball program, Paintball campers will participate with the rest of General Camp.
NEW - Trap Shooting Camp ($425)
For campers 11 - 14. The first 10 people who sign up for Trap Shooting Camp will get to spend an hour each day learning the finer points of shooting moving targets. This unique camp will involve 12 and 20 gauge shotguns, clay pigeons, and a spring-loaded launcher. All equipment is supplied by camp. Sister Krista and her team of eagle eye marksmen will conduct the camp, which will include teaching the art of aiming. Don’t pass up this rare opportunity to learn about the sport of target shooting.
NEW - Photojournalism Camp ($450)
New to Camp Howard this year is our Photojournalism Camp, for those interested in photography and/or journalism. The Photojournalism team will put out a daily newsletter, learning how to plan, write, layout, and design it with the help of our Photojournalism Director, Katy Weaver. Katy is a professional photographer, as well as an experienced editor-in-chief for the Oregon State University school newspaper, the Barometer.
NEW - Adventure Photo Camp ($485)
This camp will emphasize photography and hiking in some of this areas most beautiful waterfall and wilderness spots. In addition, we will take a day to learn basic kayaking skills, while paddling up the incredibly photogenic Lacamas Lake inlet. Landscape and nature photography skills will be discussed during the four, very full days of traveling to some beautiful areas!
NEW - Basketball 3x3 Camp ($385)
Camp Howard now has three regulation size basketball courts! We are holding three-on-three tournaments this summer, in three different age brackets. Campers will receive a reversible jersey, and play for two hours a day. When not on the courts, they will participate with General Camp. At the end of the week, the teams will pool together and play in a campers-vs.-camp staff game.
NEW - Mike Bergmann Running Camp ($175)
Come run, come all to the Mike Bergmann Camp at Camp Howard. Enjoy a weekend full of mind, body, and ‘sole’ as we explore both the mental and physical aspects of running to improve form, techniques, and reduction of injuries. Join St. Mary’s Academy’s assistant cross-country coach, Mike Bergmann, for miles of beautiful trails and running advice while enjoying Camp Howard’s amenities. We encourage both boys and girls ages 11-14 of any running level to sign up. If you have any interest in track and field, cross country, or just simply enjoy the outdoors, this is sure to be a great weekend. There is no need for participants to have any prior running experience, as we will accommodate anyone and everyone. Every runner will receive a complimentary Camp Howard t-shirt perfect for summer runs! So lace up those shoes and come ready to run! (Mike Bergmann is the Commissioner of the CYO Track Program.)
General Camp ($360)
This is the core camp experience at Camp Howard. Open to girls and boys ages 7-14. Enjoy a fun, memorable week where you can experience a wide variety of activities. Try target sports, go on a nature hike, develop your skills in arts & crafts or swim and lounge at our pool. During elective time you may choose from any activity at camp, such as shooting at our paintball range or canoeing in our pond. Every effort will be made for you to experience all of the activities you would like to do.
Mini Camp ($300)
Open to girls and boys ages 7-10. Mini Camp has been set up to give the participant a true Camp Howard experience, but in four days instead of six. Fully integrated into the General Camp program, and with its’ own staff, Mini Camp could be for those on a budget, those testing out the residential camp experience, or those staying away from home for the first time.
Day Camp Monday - Thursday ($225)
Open to boys and girls, ages 6-9. Day Camp is in its’ fifth year at Camp Howard, and has rapidly grown in popularity. The campers will get to participate in a variety of our programs, including archery, paintball, riflery, recreation, arts and crafts, as well as visit our store and swimming pool daily. Day Camp is in operation from Monday to Thursday. We will offer daily bus transportation from the Madeleine grade school. Drop off your child at 8:00 and pick them up at 5:30.
Target Sports ($395)
Open to boys and girls ages 11-14. Target Sports campers will get to participate with the General Camp target sports program, as well as two extra hours a day learning and practicing advanced techniques in our paintball, riflery, archery, and trap shooting ranges. It has been one of our most popular camps, and with renovations and expansions to our ranges, even more time and hands-on experience will be possible this summer!
Counselor in Training - Two week course ($485)
Open to males and females ages 15-17. Our Counselor in Training (CIT) program allows the teenagers a chance to develop their leadership skills through classroom-style sessions, shadowing our experienced counselors, and hands-on counseling experience. It is a two-week program, and offered on two different levels. CIT Level I is for those who have just finished their time as a camper and are interested in one day being a counselor at Camp Howard. CIT Level II is for those who have completed the two-week CIT Level I program. Level II has more advanced class sessions, and the second week will be hands-on experience leading a Day Camp cabin.
CIT II participants who have excelled in the program will be considered top candidates for Camp Howard positions when they become eligible by age.
To be eligible for CIT Level II you must have completed CIT Level I.
2nd Year - Secret Agent Camp ($375)
Open to boys and girls ages 6 - 14. Back by popular demand, Secret Agent Camp is open for even more sessions this summer! Throughout their week, the campers will use a variety of investigative tools to help solve a mystery that has been troubling Camp Howard. These tools may include interviews and interrogations, finding and interpreting/analyzing clues, and building a case in order to receive a warrant.Volleyball Camp - Weekend ($175)
CYO Volleyball Camp is open to girls ages 9-14 who would like to improve their skills, meet others who love to play volleyball and enjoy the camp environment. Play on one of our many sand courts with beautiful Mt. Hood as your backdrop.
2nd Year - Fishing Camp // Week long ($435) // Weekend ($175)
Open to 7 - 14 year olds. At fishing camp, campers will learn how to bait and cast out at our pond. After practice of these basic fishing skills, we will take our young fishermen and fisherwomen to the Sandy Rainbow Trout Farm so that they can catch their own fish. They will bring this fish back to Camp Howard, where they will learn to clean, cook, and enjoy their prize catch.
The weekend Fishing Camp is just a compacted version of the full week one. There will be instructional sessions on casting and equipment, with a trip to the Trout Farm in Sandy on Saturday. They will take their fish back to Camp Howard, where they will learn to clean and cook the fish. After catching, cleaning, and cooking their prize fish, they will eat it for dinner Saturday night!
2nd Year - Movie Producer Camp ($465)
In Movie Producer Camp, the campers will get to participate in a full production process of a short film. This will include brainstorming the actual work, writing and creating a storyboard and a script, acting, technical responsibilities (lighting, sound, etc.), and editing of the footage into a finished piece. The final project will be presented to the rest of the camp, and each Movie Producer will receive a copy of the DVD.
2nd Year - Family Camp - Weekend ($125 adults/$50 kids ages 6 - 17)
Look forward to a weekend of enjoyable, relaxing family time and fun in the woods when you sign up for Family Camp this summer. Choose one of three arrival dates, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, and depart by noon on Sunday. Stay in a cozy (and heated) cabin but pray for sun! In addition to lounging by the pool or under a fir tree, sipping a soft drink or hot cup of coffee, engage in a variety of activities, including volleyball, croquet, horse shoes, Frisbee, hiking, arts & crafts, or swimming. Play cards at night, enter a pinochle tournament or put together a poker game. Kids can play a variety of board games or learn to play pinochle in the evening, enter a marble tournament, or join in karaoke! What would camp be without a campfire and roasting marshmallows? We will have just the right activities for your group to choose from. For an extra fee you may be interested in learning to shoot trap on Friday and enter a tournament on Saturday afternoon. Ladies and gentlemen alike will enjoy this activity. This will be a great time to get unplugged from the daily grind and get back to nature in a great environment. 2nd Year - Survival Camp // Weekend ($175) // Week long ($425)
Have you ever wondered what you would do if you became lost in the woods? Would you know what to do first? Could you keep yourself dry, warm, hydrated, and fed? Participants will learn the basics of survival. Youngest campers will learn the most basic rules of survival and why those rules are so important. They will also be exposed to basic camping and survival skills while being carefully supervised by our instructors. Older campers will learn the basics and gain practical experience in determining the correct plan of action, building a shelter, starting a fire, procuring water and food, navigation, emergency first aid, and signaling.
Survival Weekend Camp will have two age groups: 3-5 grade and 6-8 grade youth. The full Survival Camp, for high school young adults (8-12 grade), will have campers attend classroom and outdoor activities to acquire their basic survival skills. The Survival Camp will culminate it’s training with a two day campout testing their newly acquired survival skill in controlled and supervised test scenarios. This camp will be a lot of fun while building important lifesaving skills.
Jesus Jamboree - Weekend ($175)
If you are age 7-14, and you would like to spend a weekend celebrating the life of Jesus, with the Sister of S. Mary Oregon, this is the camp for you. A fun filled weekend where youth enjoy campfires, arts & crafts, singing, prayer, sports, Mass and social fun with friends. Campers will explore Catholic saints, culture and prayer from different countries around the world. This camp will be celebrating its’ 9th year at Camp Howard. You will love this camp experience!
Family Kayak Camp ($125)
This event will bring parent and youth together while learning the basics of recreational kayaking. We will meet each day and discover the necessary for an American Canoe Association certification for Introduction to Kayaking (Level 1). Basic kayaking skills, and knowledge will be acquired by training session and paddling trips on Lacamas Lake and the Columbia River. Participants will be encouraged to join an overnight campout on Government Island after a day of paddling and exploring.
Kayak Adventure Camp ($465)
This is a six-day, CYO/Camp Howard based kayaking experience for High School aged young adults. The Kayak Camp includes basic instruction to safely paddle recreational kayaks in lakes and moving water. The adventure includes scheduled instruction days with on-the-water trips planned each day. The camp culminates with an overnight camp-out on Government Island on the Columbia River. The successful completion of the Kayak Adventure Camp will earn the camper certificates of course completion for the American Canoe & Kayak Association’s Intro to Kayaking (Level 1), and Essentials of River Kayaking (Level 2).
