CYO-Camp Howard - Kayak Adventure Camp

What to Bring:

Clothing:
**Note**: You will notice that on many of the clothing items listed below we ask that you do not bring cotton items, but instead bring wool, fleece, polypropylene, etc. This is for your own safety and comfort. Cotton retains almost zero percent of its capacity for warmth if it becomes wet and cotton takes a long time to dry. Wool, fleece and other synthetics retain approximately 90-95% of their capacity for warmth even when wet, and some (like fleece) dry very quickly.

1 pr water shoes (sandals must have heel strap)
1 pr tennis shoes (no holes, prefer lowtops because of space)
4 prs of socks
5 prs of underwear
1 pr (top & bottom) long underwear (polypropylene, thermax or capilene - no cotton)
1 warm *wool or fleece/pile sweater or shirt, long sleeved (no cotton)
1 pr of long wool or fleece/pile pants (no cotton- no jeans)
1 set of rain gear: must be WATERPROOF - coated nylon/gore-tex raincoat and pants, hood is preferrable.
2 short sleeved t-shirts
1 long sleeved light colored t-shirt (protection from the sun)
2 prs of shorts (no denim)
1 WARM jacket or parka
1 *wool hat/ski hat
1 sun hat (with brim to protect face/ears)
1pr paddling gloves (for comfort)
2 swimsuits
*Shop for wool clothing at thrift stores (Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc.)

Equipment:
1 medium sized waterproof bag (space is limited, please keep this in mind when choosing a bag)
Sleeping bag (warm to 25 degrees). Synthetic preferred over down. No cotton slumber bags.
2 nylon stuff sacks (for sleeping bag and for organizing your gear)
Sleeping pad ("Closed cell" foam or "Thermarest")
Plastic garbage bags (3, heavy duty, extra-large 32 gal+ to line your duffel bag and stuff sack
2 Nalgene water bottles (1.5 to 2 qt. size minimum - screw top that doesn't leak)
Small flashlight/headlamp with 1 set of extra batteries
1 cup and spoon (plastic cup with handle is preferred, marked with name - NO PAPER)
Sunglasses 100% UV
Pocket knife (no hunting knives)
6 - 1 gallon-sized zip lock bags for packing clothing, etc.
Personal repair kit (needle/thread, thermarest patch kit, duck tape)
15 ft of personal light-weight rope/clothesline (Small cordage)

Toiletries:
1 small bar or bottle of biodegradable soap
Toothbrush and small tube toothpaste
1 towel
Sunscreen (level 15 or higher) ESSENTIAL!
Chapstick or lip balm with sunscreen
Insect repellant (not aerosol)
**Women - feminine hygiene products
Small pack of wet wipes (travel size)

Optional:

Paperback book
Camera & film
Small notebook/journal & pen
Deck of cards

Do not bring:

Do not count the clothes you wear to camp as part of the trip equipment. You will need to bring a small overnight bag to keep these clothes, another clean set, and shower items for when we return to base camp on day 8. This bag will be left in a secure place at camp while you are on your trip.
Do not bring radios/walkmans or any other electric devices


WEIGHT AND SPACE ARE IMPORTANT FACTORS, SO FOLLOW THE LIST CLOSELY, AND DO NOT BRING EXTRA ITEMS.
