A concussion is an injury to the brain or spinal cord due to jarring from
a blow, fall or the like. Shock caused by the impact of a collision, blow
etc. An injury produced by a violent blow and followed by temporary
or prolonged loss of function.
Second impact syndrome - This occurs when an athlete, who has already sustained a head injury, sustains a second head injury before symptoms have cleared from the first injury. Many times this occurs because the athlete has returned to competition and play before his or her first injury symptoms resolve. People don't realize that days or weeks may be needed
before concussion symptoms resolve.
OREGON LAW
Senate Bill 348/Max's Law, an Oregon law passed in 2009 and implemented for the 2010-2011 school year, requires all coaches of school athletic teams to receive annual training & education about concussions; how to recognize symptoms and how to seek proper medical treatment. It also restricts the return of players to games or practices who show signs of concussions until they have been cleared by a medical professional.
Oregon coaches are required to watch the video below every year, take the test and receive a certificate. You must register and login to participate. once you have completed the test, cyo can verify that through the nfhs database, so you do not need to submit the certificate to your athletic director.
